Hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games
When managing a major sporting event with 7,000 athletes from 70 nations participating across 15 venues in four cities, collaboration is key.
Australia’s sixth largest city hosted a successful 2018 Commonwealth Games by leveraging GIS to bring together data from seven different agencies, providing real-time critical operational insights to all stakeholders.
The major challenge in a feat like this is standardising data formats and creating a single point of truth for all agencies to access ― 300 users were sharing 60 datasets across the City of Gold Coast’s Commonwealth Games team alone.
A single point of truth also facilitates information-sharing between both council and non-council users on any device within any location across the City of Gold Coast ― at any given time. This led to enhanced situational awareness during the Commonwealth Games. Not only has the City of Gold Coast’s use of geospatial technology improved awareness of the value of GIS within council, but it has also set the benchmark for Queensland’s local governments and emergency response agencies on how to work collaboratively and achieve better efficiency.
