Knowing where road defects are emerging can help councils make faster, more informed maintenance decisions.
Through Asset AI ®, Deloitte and Esri Australia are bringing artificial intelligence and location intelligence together to help turn road condition data into actionable insight.
Developed by Transport for NSW and Deloitte in collaboration with IPWEA NSW & ACT, Canterbury-Bankstown Council and Esri Australia, Asset AI uses cameras mounted on vehicles already travelling local roads to collect current road condition data. Artificial intelligence and computer vision detect issues such as potholes, cracking, faded line markings, and damaged road signs.
Asset AI brings together Deloitte’s industry and technology expertise with Esri Australia’s geospatial capabilities. Using Esri’s ArcGIS technology, Deloitte has created a location-based view of road condition data that helps councils see where issues are occurring and prioritise maintenance based on factors such as severity, risk and road hierarchy.
During its trial phase, Asset AI detected and classified more than 300,000 defects across 13,000 kilometres of road networks, demonstrating how AI and location intelligence can support a more proactive approach to road maintenance.
For Deloitte, Esri Australia’s expertise helped bring the platform to life.
“Engaging Esri Australia’s skilled professional services team to support Deloitte’s delivery of Asset AI proved to be a very successful partnership. Their advice and technical input allowed our project team to rapidly develop a robust and engaging client portal that exceeded our initial designs.” Paul Bigg-Wither, Director Geospatial, Deloitte
