Engaging communities in West Wyalong

Riverina Local Land Services (LLS) provide support across 6.7 million hectares of rural New South Wales – an area home to 17 Local Governments and over 166,000 residents.

To ensure Riverina’s regional communities remain sustainable and profitable into the future, they assist land managers make better decisions on agricultural production, biosecurity, and natural resource management.

As part of a project to connect West Wyalong communities and passing tourists with the Indigenous history of the region, Riverina LLS sought to capture, map, and share place names in the traditional Wiradjuri language.

The challenge lay in capturing knowledge passed down through generations and finding an interactive mechanism through which to tell location-based stories about the landscapes and diverse natural features after which many areas are named.
