Effective asset management starts with taking a geographic view of your business

Location is inherent in almost all organisational data: people have residences, parcels have destinations, assets have locations. In fact, more than 80 percent of business data has a geographic component.

Geographic Information System (GIS) technology maps the geography of an organisation’s data to expose patterns and relationships otherwise hidden in numeric tables and databases.

When integrated with IBM software, GIS technology plots asset data onto a map enabling asset managers to visualise the relationships among managed assets and other mapped features, such as roads, buildings and pipelines.  This creates a level of awareness and insight unattainable via any other business tool.

The DC Water Story

Using Esri technology, DC Water transformed their IBM system into a powerful visualisation tool – allowing the utility to literally map and explore the geographic relationships of their assets.

The new business insights delivered through this initiative helped DC Water reduce their labour costs by more than US$1.8 million per year. And that was just the start of it.
