ArcGIS Online - Bing Maps Changes

Esri has recently announced important changes to the use of Microsoft’s Bing Maps within ArcGIS Online.

Following the March 2013 release of ArcGIS Online, Bing Maps will no longer be available for free in the ArcGIS Online default basemap gallery.

To assist you with this transition, below is an outline of some frequently asked questions.

How does this affect your use of Bing Maps within ArcGIS Online?

Existing web maps that already include Bing Maps will continue to work for the lifetime of the web map.  However, complimentary access to Bing Maps for new web maps will cease with the March release of ArcGIS Online

From March 2013, if you wish to create new web maps using Bing Maps within ArcGIS Online, you will need to obtain your own licence key from MapData Services, or directly from Microsoft.

What will happen with my current web maps that include Bing Maps?

If you have web maps that already include Bing Maps, they will continue to work after Bing Maps is removed from the Esri default basemap gallery.  The changes only apply to new web maps created within ArcGIS Online.

How do I obtain a Bing Maps licence key?

You can obtain a licence key from MapData Services, or directly from Microsoft.  There may be a cost associated with this, depending on your usage requirements. Information on the different types of licence keys is available on the Microsoft website, including trial, basic and enterprise licence key options.

How do I use a Bing Maps key that I have acquired through one of these channels?

With the ArcGIS Online March 2013 release, functionality will be added so users can enter their own Bing Maps key to authorise use of Bing Maps basemaps.

What are my other basemap and imagery options?

There are a number of high-quality complimentary maps and services you can use in ArcGIS Online and your ArcGIS applications, with the World Street Map, World Topographic Map, Canvas Map and National Geographic World Map providing a range of cartographic options. In addition to these resources, the World Imagery map service will be adding more detailed imagery for Australia in the near future.  ArcGIS Online also provides geocoding services with worldwide coverage.
