Sophisticated Mapping Technology Gives Ratepayers Unique Insight Into New Rates

By Alicia Stumm13 Dec 2011

Location intelligence specialists Esri Australia have given ratepayers a unique insight into the city’s new Council rates with a map that layers the recent rate changes over areas impacted by the January floods.

Esri Australia Managing Director Brett Bundock said the value of the map lay in combining the flood data and rate changes in a geographic context.

“Once the rates data and flood lines are layered over a map of Brisbane, a clearer picture of the situation and implications emerges,” Mr Bundock said.

“Taking the published rates data and putting it in a visual context is much a more intuitive way of analysing data and makes it easier to recognise relationships between different types of information, because they share a common factor - location.”

But Mr Bundock said the map was not just a powerful way to visualise these relationships – it also enabled in-depth analysis.

“Users just need to click on their suburb and information about the past and current rates comes up on the screen,” Mr Bundock said.

Mr Bundock said developing the map has been a good opportunity to put their GIS experience and technical knowledge to use, to deliver a valuable tool to the wider Brisbane community.

“We usually partner with government and commercial enterprises to drive greater value from their data assets,” Mr Bundock said.

“It’s very gratifying to see our mapping technology used to add value to an issue that affects us all.”

The map reveals information including:

Rates Change Number of Suburbs  Number of Suburbs touched by the 2011 Flood Extent
Average Increase above 4% (Above CPI)   47 16
Average Increase 3% to 4% (About CPI)      23 9
Average Increase to 3% (Below CPI)   68 36
Average Decrease to -3%      28 13
Average Decrease -3% to -4%    11 9
Average Decrease above -4%        7 5
